Ten Top Rated Smartphones of 2011

A smartphone is more than just a mobile phone. Cell phones’ primary function was to make voice call, and well… okay, to send and receive short text messages (SMS). With advanced Internet browsing and email capabilities, as well as a ton of PDA (personal digital assistant) types of applications loaded in these things, smartphones are more like handheld mini-computers that we carry with us at all times. And while only English-speaking user may be able to fully appreciate the compound “smart|phone”, the word sounds almost identical in multiple other languages (e.g.: German, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian), should you wonder.

Now, getting to the ranking question… What are the hottest and top rated smartphones this year?

One may expect iPhone and BlackBerry Torch to top the list… Alas!

According to ZDNet’s Matthew Miller neither iPhone 4, nor the Torch, nor even HTC smartphones belong to the top 3 list. ZDNet’s full 2011 ranking looks as follows:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S II
  2. Motorola Droid Bionic (Verizon)
  3. LG G2X (T-Mobile)
  4. Apple iPhone 4
  5. HTC EVO 3D
  6. HTC ThunderBolt
  7. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
  8. Google Nexus S and 4G
  9. HP Pre 3
  10. Dell Venue Pro

But let’s look at two other lists (not to rely on a single source only).

Judging by BestBuy‘s top-rated list, for example, we see the following picture:

  1. HTC EVO 4G (Sprint)
  2. Samsung SCH-i500 (Verizon)
  3. BlackBerry Torch 9800 (AT&T)
  4. LG Optimus V (Virgin Mobile)
  5. Google Nexus S (T-Mobile)
  6. Samsung Gravity (T-Mobile)
  7. Apple iPhone 4
  8. Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint)
  9. HTC DROID (Verizon Wireless)
  10. Apple iPhone 3GS

And finally, MensXP.com has a list that’s closer to our original expectations (at least in the top two places):

  1. Apple iPhone 4
  2. BlackBerry Torch 9800
  3. Samsung I9000 Galaxy S
  4. HTC Desire S
  5. Nokia E7
  6. Google Nexus S (Samsung GT-I9020T)
  7. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
  8. Nokia N8
  9. Motorola Defy
  10. HTC 7 Mozart
