Top 10 Musicians and Rock Stars That Died at 27


It so sadly happened that many talented contemporary musicians — especially from those who belonged to rock and roll-related styles of music — died at the age of only 27. Three days ago Amy Winehouse joined the sad club. Today, with memories of her, and other famous musicians, we’re bringing the list of who we believe to be the top ten members of the “27 Club” (in chronological order):

  1. Robert Johnson — Bluesman; who recorded famous and influential set of 29 songs that influenced many world-known musicians, including Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin. Died August 16, 1938.
  2. Johnny Kidd — Leader, singer & songwriter for Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Died October 7, 1966.
  3. Brian Jones — Rolling Stones founder and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. Died July 3, 1969.
  4. Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson — Leader, singer and primary composer of Canned Heat. Died September 3, 1970.
  5. Jimi Hendrix — Pioneering electric guitarist, singer and songwriter for The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. Died September 18, 1970.
  6. Janis Joplin — Lead vocalist and songwriter for Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Kozmic Blues Band and Full Tilt Boogie Band. Died October 4, 1970.
  7. Jim Morrison — Lead singer, songwriter and video director for The Doors. Died July 3, 1971.
  8. Ron “Pigpen” McKernan — Founding member and keyboardist of the Grateful Dead. Died March 8, 1973
  9. Kurt Cobain — Founding member, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for Nirvana. Died April 5, 1994.
  10. Amy Winehouse — English singer and songwriter. Died July 23, 2011.
